You’ve decided that it is time to make the move from your current job to a new one. Before you even start to look for interview opportunities, there are a few things you should be doing to help you prepare for the change.
But, where do you begin? Here are a few things you can do to start putting the process in place.
Create a timetable
Searching for a new job can be time-consuming especially when you have a full-time job. To make it more manageable draw up a timetable and break it in sections- research, selection, applications, and interview preparation, then add in a realistic time frame next to each part.
What is your ideal job?
Think about what your ideal job would be and write a job description for it. We can't promise that you will find an exact match, but you can pick out certain qualities from it when going through your job search.
Use your network
Sometimes the best opportunities come from people we know. Start contacting some of your
trusted contacts to see if they have or know of any opportunities in the job market.
Utilise recruitment agencies
Recruitment consultants are also a great way to seek advice and to get an insight into opportunities available to you. A good recruiter will be able to advise you in the best way on where to take your career, as well as mentor you through the job switch.
Sign up for alerts and newsletters
This is a great way to get informed about the latest opportunities available. These are often tailored to you personally, so they will only inform you of opportunities that will be of interest to you
Set aside some job searching time
When you have a full-time job it can make it difficult to search for jobs and it can feel like a second job. Setting aside an hour a day will help with this. What's even better is that majority of all job boards are now mobile friendly, so you can search for jobs during your lunch break at work.
Build your LinkedIn presence
LinkedIn is a great way to hear about new opportunities and to network with a variety of professionals. Start to follow companies and connect with recruiters in the sectors and industries that you are interested in.
In addition, make sure your profile is up-to-date to maximise your appeal to potential new employers. Add a recent picture and details of your latest experience, skills and expertise.
Refresh your CV
As well as updating your LinkedIn profile, the most important part is ensuring your CV has all your most recent and relevant experience, as this is what you will be sending out to potential employers.
Ensure all your contact information is correct but most of all ensure your experience information is as current as possible.
Doing all of the things above will help make your job switch easier to manage and will help you find your new dream job.
