Your first day in your new job will always be a daunting experience, but there are a few things you can do to ensure you make a good first impression.

Dress appropriately

Most companies have a dress code policy. So, ensure you have established what this is before your first day. Nowadays, some companies have a more relaxed dress code and allow their employees to "dress down". However, you must ensure you are still wearing “work appropriate” clothing.

Arrive on time

Punctuality is key for your first day. Make sure you know when they are expecting you on your first day and ensure you arrive at least 10 minutes before this time.

Be proactive

On your first day you are likely to be given a series of tasks to be getting on with to get you started and warmed up to the business. If you find that you finish these tasks quicker than expected, be sure to ask if there is anything else you can be getting on with or help with.

Absorb as much information as possible. Be aware of what’s going on around you. This will help you get to grips with the business. Make sure you ask lots of questions if you are unsure about anything. Self-sufficiency and a strong appetite to learn are key traits your new employer will immediately value.

Be prepared to work hard

To make the best first impression, make sure you are ready to work hard. Accept responsibility of various tasks and enjoy getting acquainted with your new role, team and environment.

There will be a lot happening on your first day and in your first week. However, it will all be highly valuable to help you integrate into the business.
