4 tips for your skype interview

From displaying your messy bedroom to looking like you’ve just rolled out of bed, skype interviews can feel like an unusual way to be interviewed. However, they are becoming increasingly popular and the new way of interviewing candidates at the first stage.

It is not abnormal to be asked to attend a skype interview these days but there are certain things you should make sure you do to ensure you are well prepared for it.

 

Dress smart

Even though you are not travelling to an office setting it is still important to look the part. Even when sitting in a skype interview, make sure you are dressed appropriately. You don’t want to look like you’ve just rolled out of bed.

Find a quiet setting

It is vital you find a quiet space to sit. Avoid public spaces, and anywhere your microphone will pick up a lot of background noise. It’s also important to find a suitable background. Make sure it is neutral and not distracting to the person that is interviewing you.

Make sure you make lots of eye contact, smiles and engage in the in the interview. Make sure you are sat up straight and aren’t slouching and ensure you speak clearly and concise.

Be prepared

You may have been given a brief of what your interviewer might ask you. Make sure you have thoroughly read the brief and prepare some notes around what you’d like to say and discuss. This will make the interview itself less daunting and you won’t have to think on your feet too much.

Be technically prepared

Executing and online interview can come with its technical glitches. Make sure you have downloaded Skype well in advance of the time of the interview and make sure you have tested your microphone and camera to ensure they are working.

It is also good to have a “plan B” option. In case your computer has any technical issues on the day of your interview, make sure you have a back-up computer which you can use. This could be your friends, a flat mates or family members.

Skype is usually used for social interaction between friends and family and is therefore usually very informal. It’s important to be mindful that you will need to come across more professionally in your skype interview.
